Designer Monty Spindler has completely redesigned his freeride foil model by removing the three cambers from the Skyscape, making jibes much easier for amateur foilers. To compensate for the loss in stability, an extra batten was added, and the profile was slightly elongated while getting rid of the semi-wide mast sleeve.

ON THE WATER

The Skyscape features a noticeably softer leech. While an SDM mast is recommended, the 7.0 and smaller sizes are also compatible with RDM masts. Off-plane, the rig may feel a bit bulky, but this disappears once flying. Without cambers, the rig is less locked-in than the previous version, offering increased freedom of movement. This starts with the pumping action, which delivers plenty of drive thanks to the elastic upper sail. The improved return translates into solid lift during takeoff.

Although it’s stable for a no-cam sail, the new profile has a bit of give, allowing some fine-tuned trimming for performance. Riders who enjoy an active sailing style will appreciate the sail’s lively character and its throttle-like response. The Skyscape supports a dynamic sailing stance, with solid pressure in the harness, ideal for sailing with windward heel. Its overall softness results in a comfortable ride. Once flying, the sail provides a smooth and consistent horizontal airflow. During jibes, the Skyscape maintains drive for longer, easing the sail transition. A second outhaul eyelet increases the sail’s wind range.

VERDICT

By dropping its cambers, the Skyscape is no longer reserved for die-hard racers who prefer locked-in profiles. Instead, it opens up to performance-oriented freeriders. Streamlined yet still packed with power, the Loft delivers a lively ride with more freedom of control. This responsive yet accessible rig will appeal to freeriders who enjoy extracting performance through thoughtful sail handling and trim.
